Dragon Quest X has now arrived on Wii in Japan, with a Wii U version also said to be on the way in the future, and publisher Square Enix will no doubt be hoping that the substantial online play will attract a lot of loyal gamers. Any title like this with a focus of online play needs consistent and new content to keep gamers coming back, and it seems to be an area that shouldn't be a problem with the latest in this famous series.
According to Nikkei (as reported by Andriasang), the aim is to support the new title for up to ten years, and no doubt the Wii U version — plus the system's backwards compatibility with Wii copies — would play a big role in that. Although Nikkei didn't go into specifics, producer Yosuke Saito has previously said that the title will receive major revisions every ten weeks, which is expected to include new story quests.
This strategy is designed to make the profitability of this title last for years to come. Assuming this one makes it to the West, would you play a game like this for a number of years if the content kept coming, or would you move on after a certain period of time? Wow, that's actually quite promising if it turns out to actually happen.. I'll be looking in to the WiiU version of the game once it comes out.
I'll definitely pick it up if it comes out here (preferably the Wii U version) but I doubt I'll be playing the game for ten years.
Let's just hope that the MMO structure doesn't cause dismay for the Dragon Quest series as it has the Final Fantasy series.
Time will tell if this is a good title or not. If this title actually flops in Japan, seeing as Dragon Quest is huge over there, then it's an enormous flop.
And that would be a lot considering Dragon Quest VII was very well received over there, whilst in the west it was heavily criticised!
10 years? No way is that going to happen! This statement may come back to bite them in say..3 years!
Interesting plan. Well I'm not sure on the MMO game play, I'm still hoping i comes to North America
@Aqueous I believe Nintendo are on particularly friendly terms with the Dragon Quest franchise, as far as titles like Dragon Quest IX, the DS remakes of IV, V and VI, and Fortune Street are concerned.
It will more than likely, definitely happen.
Not sure how it is in Japan with MMO's, but if it's anything like in the west.... I give it a year tops. Most MMO's are lucky to make it even that long now.... Star Wars....
The way I'm reading this is that after 10 years I won't be able to play the game anymore and that saddens me as I still playGameboy Color DQ1,2,and 3 on my GBA.
I don't know if ten years is so improbable...they've sure kept FFXI going for an absurdly long time, and Dragon Quest is even MORE popular in Japan.
If this game releases in America at all (which I wouldn't necessarily count on, or at least not soon...still waiting for Rocket Slime 3), I'm absolutely POSITIVE it'll only be the Wii U version. There would be little point releasing the Wii version NOW, and after Wii U launch...forget about it.
Notice that it's "up to" ten years.
Given that some games like Ultima Online and Everquest still draw crowds more than 10 years after they debuted, it wouldn't be unheard of for DQX to do the same. It really relies on having a solid game and a good community. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
@Wheels2050 - Ah, nice catch. I didn't even see that bit...
Still, I'd really like to see Square-Enix give DQX a lot of post-release support (and not just make half-assed 'Horse Armour' esque DLC).
And, if that's the case, then it'd be interesting to see if the Wii version will receive substantial DLC...
What scares me the most is I will get it and I will play it for 10 years. I love and hate MMORPG's. They are so fun that once I start I end up missing out on dozens of great games because I'd rather play the MMORPG. I have missed out on so many great games over the last 15 years that I never went back to play...damn you EQ and WoW...
Well, it's worked for WoW so far. Don't know if it'll have the same impact WoW had to sustain it for that long (plus the fact there are WAY more PCs in private homes versus Wii consoles for deeper market penetration of WoW). Just as well, its an ambitious idea for Square-Enix and I hope it goes well for as long as it can. The DLC for IX was great and I'm curious to see exactly what they're planning for X.
Man, I really want to get this game and see what it's all about!
depends.
i've played several games for several years.
Gameplay has to be awesome.
There has to be nice, complex leveling and stats,
I definitely have a lot of interest in Dragon Quest X, but the only way I'd play it for a long time online is if there were a free option. As I recall, Japanese players will be getting a certain amount of online play free daily, so if that comes over with the game (which hopefully WILL come over) I'm all for it.
Final Fantasy XI evolved into a great game over 10 years. Lets hope this turns out just as well.
As long as they bring it to other regions, I can see the game having a very VERY long shelf life. But bringing it to other regions is key. It would be even better if they support as many platforms as possible.
@Wheels2050
Im still playing EQ (started again after a 10 year break) on a free shard. Project 1999. I so love it and miss games like that.
If only all games had 10 years of support promised [sigh]
