Yesterday during the latest Nintendo Direct we found out Minecraft would be released exclusively on the New Nintendo 3DS.
Since then, it has been clarified the closet equivalent to Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition is the 0.15.4 build of Minecraft: Pocket Edition.
With plans to bring a local multiplayer component to the New 3DS version of the game, how far will the updates go?
Aubrey Norris who is part of the Minecraft team recently replied to a fan on Twitter regarding a question about the upcoming “Better Together Update” which will unify the Windows 10, mobile and console editions of Minecraft – including the Nintendo Switch version.
While the New 3DS version may miss out on social unification, it’s still impressive how the team at Other Ocean Interactive - who are behind this 3DS adaptation - have managed to provide world sizes that are 2016 x 2016 and 128 blocks high. These dimensions exceed the sizes of the maps in the Wii U version of the game. Not bad for hardware based on a device originally released in 2011.
Let us know in the comments if you have bought Minecraft on New 3DS yet and what your thoughts are about it are so far.

Wow. Anyway, they're getting MineCraft so not a big deal
I can't wait for Mojang to release an update that finally gets us out of the 0.15 fiasco and straight to Version 1. Don't know when that'll happen...
Id have been flabbergasted if it did
Still a very impressive world size though
So I guess the 3DS Minecraft will be Better Alone...
I have yet to buy any iteration of Minecraft but that might change now that it’s on my favorite console; 3DS. Having not played any other version and hence can’t compare it to anything, I think I’ll be very happy.
So this is the 'other people ruin everything' version then? I'm in.
This answered the only question I had about the New 3DS version.
Better late than never but it's too bad all the hype of what it could had been died a long time ago. Now it's just kinda there cause it seems to be everywhere nowadays.
What I would like to know is when the "better together" update is been released and will it be part of that update when we can transfer our world's from Wii u to the switch?
But it's not "Not bad for hardware based on a device originally released in 2011" as it only works on the NEW 3DS which only came out in October 2014 (Japan Release)
@dethmart
You can, right now, transfer Wii U worlds to the Switch. The update came out a while ago
Duh!
The 3DS version seems like a total waste of money.
Still don't understand how they're selling a gimped version of the $7 app for $30. That's preying on the uninformed. Maybe when they finally get online working, and add in the Nintendo world, then maybe $30, but it seems nearly criminal as is.
It's practically almost cheaper to buy a kid a Amazon Fire tablet and the game on there than just this game.
The update is for Android, iOS, Kindle Fire, Windows, Xbox One and Switch. Sony doesn't want any kind of cross-play and older consoles like 360 and Wii U are out. Well, Wii U is not old but you know what I mean. Even Nintendo stopped supporting it.
If New 3DS/New 2DS was able to handle the update, which is considered a new version of the game, it would get it, like Switch. They are probably using whatever they can handle. The fact that the New 3DS/New 2DS is very popular and the dual screens can be handy for Minecraft can turn this into a very nice version of the game. I wouldn't rule out online features added to it in the future.
Also, it should be noted how Nintendo is collaborating with Microsoft in the cross-play venture for the very first time, with other publishers and games to follow like Rocket League. It is shocking to see Nintendo ahead of Sony for once and that should be celebrated.
@MatthewHindmarsh
Really? I must of missed that. Thanks I'll have a look later
I think having Minecraft on the New 3DS is a technical achievement in itself.
Since I already have the Switch version to play on the go, this is largely irrelevant.
Probably should of called it "My First Minecraft for New 3DS" for the little kids that are interested but dunno where to start.
@Bunkerneath and the new 3DS is based on a device that came out in 2011. Which means they're not wrong.
It is definitely peculiar that this game is $30 when it's the pocket version that I can buy for $7 for this very iPad I'm using to type this message. And all the home console versions are now $20 or less, new, so not sure why they couldn't have at least priced it at $20. I plan to buy it but only the physical copy for 3DS and only when the price drops.
Someone ask them when the physiscal copy is coming. Publishers can make the gap as large as they want, I'm not buying digital copies of retail games 👌
@rjejr Take me to your planet where $57 is 'practically almost' cheaper than $30
@BlueOcean Minecraft cross play news didn't help the XboxOne in any way so SONY does not care.
Just like Nintendo does not care that they cut in game chat out of it for the Switch. People will buy it anyway and pretend it is not needed and play Minecraft in silence. Sony fools will get it for the PS4 and pretend crossplay is not needed - and play with a fraction of the community. And so on.
Anyone who really cares about Minecraft gets the PC/xbox version.
@AlternateButtons is it $23 bigger?
I got it for my 11 year old and he won't stop talking about how it's better than PE due to the controls alone. He's seriously impressed and having a great time with it. It's not due to a lack of other versions of Minecraft in the house either. We have it on PC, Android, PS4, Wii U, and Switch too. PC will always be his favorite, but this is definitely going to be his go to version for on the go.
So I have a question. Since this is close to an earlier version of PE, does it have music? I remember when I used to okay it on an older phone, it didn't have the music soundtrack.
@BlueOcean
Hey. Sony does cross-play with certain games with PC, i guess they don't feel like they have to with this game, the Minecraft userbase on ps4 is big enough to find others to play with, though it would have been good to have cross-play. Having said that i recently bought it on vita very cheap, i haven't a clue what i am doing, there doesn't seem to be a aim to the game, getting fed up already not knowing what's going on, what does adventure mode do
@Agramonte The updated Xbox One version is serious too. Of course, the chat feature on Switch is ridiculous, I agree. It's five or six steps backwards compared to Wii U. Smartphones, apps, cables? LOL
@EDF Story mode is a somewhat silly point-and-click graphic adventure that has received mixed reviews.
Going back to Minecraft, it's a particular game, I can perfectly understand that you don't like it. It's that kind of game that you'd better play a demo first. At least you got it cheap! You can always follow tutorials if you want to give it a second chance.
@BlueOcean
I am enjoying it but I don't know what my mission is, am I supposed to just craft and build and survive with no mission, not sure what I should be doing
@EDF I haven't played Minecraft much. It's part of my backlog.

@EDF Survival mode is basically surviving. One of the "goals" is getting experience. Summary I made using Wikipedia:
Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the player to accomplish.
Players may acquire experience points by killing mobs and other players, mining, smelting ores, breeding animals, and cooking food. Experience can then be spent on enchanting tools, armour and weapons.
Minecraft features two alternate dimensions besides the main world—the Nether and the End. The Nether is a hell-like dimension accessed via player-built portals that contains many unique resources and can be used to travel great distances in the overworld. The End is a barren land in which a boss dragon called the Ender Dragon dwells. Killing the dragon cues the game's ending credits.
Adventure mode was added to Minecraft in version 1.3; it was designed specifically so that players could experience user-crafted custom maps and adventures.
It seems that the New 3DS/New 2DS version is not closed:
This edition's closest equivalent is 0.15.4 of Minecraft: Pocket Edition, and we'll be continuing to update from there.

@AlternateButtons I've never played it yet. If I buy the 3ds version, that will be my first.
@BlueOcean True... you can still use the PC version on a Laptop so a bit more mobile, but that does not mean the Xbox version is less Feature complete.

Don't get me started - This is my Switch voice-chat crazy set-up... LOL!
@BlueOcean
Thx for the info mate, where do i find these portals for nether, do other players create them, i should check up on it. I don't like to use guides because it's a spoiler tbh
@EDF The more I read about the game the more I feel like playing but I have a lot of stuff to do at the moment and I'm afraid that this could be the kind of game that sucks your life, is it?
The Nether (warp portal):
To create the portal, one must first construct a rectangular obsidian (mined with a diamond pickaxe) frame, ranging in size from a minimum of 4×5 to a maximum of 23×23. Once the frame is constructed, it can then be activated by placing fire within the frame.
The End (final boss):
To access the End, the player must go through the process of finding and activating the end portal, found within a stronghold. Strongholds are structures that occur naturally underground and can be located using eyes of ender (blaze powder + ender pearl). Blaze powder is an item made from a blaze rod obtained from a blaze. Ender pearls can be found in stronghold altar chests.
@Dark-Link73 it has the music... And I bought and its just like any other Minecraft to me... Just waiting for the update to make it playable in 3d
@ruben602 Thanks! That's all I needed to know. It might sound silly but to me, the music is an integral part of any gaming experience. I played Minecraft PE (years ago) and a couple of clones; and without the music, it just wasn't the same.
@Dark-Link73 the music is peaceful to me... And I wasn't aware they had clones without the music 😱😱
@LegendOfPokemon no one likes you
I love this game
I'm geting board with any new updates on the game yet beacuse I want online co-op. (Nobody I know has minecraft new 3ds😔)
