Update [Thu 7th Apr, 2022 03:55 BST]: At the Sonic 2 movie "blue carpet" event, producers Toby Ascher and Neal H. Moritz said they "wouldn't even try" to replace Jim Carrey, if the actor did decide to retire.
Here's exactly what they both had to say (via IGN):
Toby Ascher: "Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family and he'll always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he would like to be around. We love Jim and he's so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible. We would love him as long as he'd like to be there with us."
Neal H. Moritz":"And I have a feeling that he loves Robotnik so much that I don't think he'll be able to walk away from it."
Original story [Sat 2nd Apr, 2022 03:00 BST]: Movie star Jim Carrey might be a joker, but apparently, he's "fairly serious" about calling time on his career.
During a recent interview with Access Hollywood, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 actor who plays Dr. Robotnik mentioned how he felt he had "done enough" and that any future projects would depend on the script.
Here's exactly what he had to say, courtesy of Variety:
“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious...It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.
“I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
And you can see the full exchange in the video below:
Paramount Pictures has already confirmed a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie - leaving many fans questioning Carrey's future involvement.
With any luck, he's already signed for three Sonic movies, and his statement in this latest interview means he'll no longer be taking on new movie contracts.
If we hear any updates, we'll let you know.

Props to him for recognizing when to call it quits; a lot of stars could benefit from that level of self-awareness.
He's been acting for ages, so I can't blame him.
Good for him, he's been away from Hollywood cause he saw what was becoming of that place. And to be fair, if we had the money to call it quits at certain age, and just enjoy life, why not?
I love Jim, and I (Mostly) loved each movie he as been in, he deserves it, He has been doing the gig for a good wile. God speed.
He's waiting for the next Dumb and Dumber movie, I guess.
He also said he was gonna start making NFT's, so that's a thing, unfortunately. No one seems to be talking about that part of the interview. Thought "seeing [us] all in the Metaverse" at The Game Awards was just a joke about corporate capitalism neglecting to understand its consumer base, but I guess he meant it? So much for his motivation of Eggman representing greed or whatever. At least he's using his own art and not stealing it, though. He's a very talented artist--even if his personal views are a bit out there.
I've been enjoying his movies all my life. Let that man enjoy his life with what he's already given us, if he so choses.
Oh and in case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening and good night.
@CharlieGirl What
He lost some of his shine when he actively campaigned against folks seeing Kick-Ass 2. Let the film do its thing, rally against violence after, but he's still a dude who has been in some stellar films. I don't recall The Majestic being much of a big deal, but I rather enjoyed that one. He also had a nice little role in Simon Birch
We all have our limits and it's good that he recognises his. The problem today is that so many Companies treat their workers like robots. Anyway I like him, he's made me laugh many times over the years and I wish him the best with whatever he decides to do.
@PcTV You beat me to it with that last quote.
That’s a humbling lesson. Glad for this man!
NINJA APPROVED
So glad he can finally had time to enjoy life again. It's not easy being a movie celebrity and creating humor with all he could give. Time for a nice long rest Jim, you deserve it.
I think they'll convince he to do at least 1 more Sonic movie. He says he might be done, but money talks.
So I guess we’re not getting a sequel to the live action How The Grinch Stole Christmas movie?
Well good for him, I'm sure his face must hurt after all those years of twisting it around.
I do like his art, especially the ones of a certain orange ex-President.
It's been a rough decade. We get it, Jim.
I was utterly obsessed with "The Mask" when it first came out. I even went as Stanley Ipkiss in Mask form for a Halloween. Then my parents, knowing how much I loved that lighthearted comedy, gifted me the original "The Mask" comics. ... Ssssssmokingly huge differences between the original source and that movie, I'll just say.
I haven't seen eye to eye with Jim regarding many things, but I am thankful for some classics (to me). All-righty then.
Imo he really should have waited until after the sonic 2 movie to say this, people might lose hope in the longevity of the series
Well, that's one way of demanding more money for a third film...
(/s)
@NintonicGamer we're not talking LOTR here...
He certainly has done enough. I love his classics, but his "method acting" is way overrated. He did a return to form with the first Sonic movie, he most likely did a great job on the second one as well.

Retirement + continued sonic movie appearances
I have enjoyed his work in his time. Really funny & the most I have laughed in a cinema theatre. His comedic style of acting did start to become "old hat" in recent years but Sonic 1's performance of Eggman was enjoyable. He's earned retirement, to be fair.
Though I've not enjoyed some of his bizarre personal views, I'll remember his movies fondly overall.
@CharlieGirl,
Please explain, I am intrigued as to what Carrey has done, or is alleged to have.
To be honest, I could see him act in maybe 2-3 more movies before retiring. He has that energy that can make movies worth watching like he did in the previous Sonic movie. And if they do decide on a third film whoever will replace him will have a lot to live up to.
I really enojyed the TV show Kidding; shame it was ubruptly bought to an end. Jim can do wonders in serious roles too, so seeing him retire is a shame, but I don't blame him for wanting to break away and pursue hobbies & happiness. Maybe one or two stellar projects might surface that might bring him back briefly.
@GammaPhonic he's allowed to have an opinion ya know.
On topic: He and Adam Sandler are probably my favorite comedic actors out there, they have so many good and funny movies that I grew up watching.
@Arkay Of course he is. But when his opinion is demonstrably wrong and could cost lives, he deserves every bit of criticism he gets.
I mean, I loved his comedies back in the Nineties and the Truman Show was amazing, but what has he done in the last twenty years aside from helping to desecrate a Dr. Seuss book?
Jim is great in the role of Robotnik, however I feel like Paul Giamatti was literally born to play that role.
Just glad it wasn't Kevin James like the rumors originally said it was going to be. We really dodged a bullet with that one.

@CharlieGirl @Sans_Undertale @johnvboy here’s the link people are complaining about after Jim complained about will smith. This was 25 years ago and whether it’s right or wrong people had different ideas of what was acceptable then. He was late 35 when he did this compared to will at 53. I think he thought this would be funny. Will didn’t think he was being funny. I never really been a Jim fan so I don’t care too much either way but I do think there are differences. And are people who make mistakes never supposed to have thoughts about others when they make mistakes. Anyways here’s the receipt.

Didnt he already take a 5 year break to become a painter?
@sixrings,
World of difference between the comedy awards and the Oscars though, which is why I assume Will has now resigned from the academy after this incident.
@johnvboy no matter what we can’t be going around hitting people. I find it extra alarming that will walked back to his seat like nothing happened. That’s just my take.

@smithyo I think at this point neither side is going to change their minds so I don’t think it’s helpful to keep bringing up the vax vs antivax stance. We get it some people are for it. Some people are against it. The end otherwise we just talk in circles about this on every thread for the next five years.
@sixrings,
Totally agree, no matter what was said you just can't walk up to someone and hit them, and the foul mouthed tirade after was also uncalled for.
@johnvboy without the “leave my wife’s name out of your mouth” comment I would have thought it was staged.

@sixrings,
He had totally lost it, you could tell, if it was just the slap then I could have been convinced it was a set up.
@Arkay,
That's the issue with most debates these days, a different or counter opinion equals the enemy.

Jeez, 12 comments were removed for being off topic.
I love Jim "I've had better" Carrey. He starred in some seriously funny films.

To get back on topic.. Jim always does great performances and I am looking forward to him being more Eggman-like in movie 2.. In movie 1, they hadn't really had him take on the appearance of the character until the post-credits. Hopefully he can continue the development of his character into movie 3.

Love this man
As much as I'll miss seeing him on the screen, I applaud his honesty and knowing when he feels it's time for a break.
Nooooo! Jim Carrey is my favorite actor of all time 😭
Most likely just a salary bargaining posture. It’s like when Daniel Craig said he’d rather slit his wrists than do another Bond film, yet he still came back.
Are people buying this though? They have a 3rd movie, clearly he would've been signed on for that. I've seen how the 2nd ends, Robotnik isn't getting written out of the next one. Unless they're going to find someone else to step in, I highly doubt this is going to be his last film.
He's recently also come to understand Hollywood is not the cool club anymore he believed it was, from what I've read. I think he's seen too much of it, and has seen too much of the other side of Life, to ever return with his soul all in. He knows now that he was selling his soul in the past, I'd dare to say. And I KNOW they can't force you back into that, not with a gun against your head, not with promises of riches and fame. One's soul is for sale or it is not.
Can't put a price on peace of mind. I'm happy for him.
Whatever he wants to do. He's been acting for quite a long time.
@JasmineDragon I know the movie isn’t for everyone, but “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is a masterpiece, and he does a great job in it - even if it’s very different from the performances he usually gives.
I used to enjoy watching most of Jim's movies, and I enjoyed the Sonic Movie, and still love his crazy take on The Riddler!
One of my favorite actors taking a break is fine by me. He has had so many films that I have gone on to love and enjoy on my stressful days, and he always manages to squeeze a heartwarming message into his movies in the plot. He will be missed, but he deserves a break, however long he wants.
@Sondheimist I actually watched that movie a few months ago, was pretty good!
If he does step away, good for him. At the same time, I'll believe it when I see it. How many times have we heard a musician/actor/athlete are done and retiring only for them to start working again, in a few weeks/months?
I'm a fan so I'll miss him in future films if this turns out true.
I never really could click with Carey's juvenile brand of humor. Couldn't take Ace Ventura even when I was young, and while The Grinch is absolutely classic, I still always felt a different actor that felt less like Ace Ventura in a Grinch suit might have been a lot less campy. But he actually sounds a lot more balanced IRL than I'd expected.
I had a feeling that, for whatever reason, he wasn't ever going to be done with Sonic. In another recent interview, he even talked about how he would love it if he got to wear a bodysuit to look more like Eggman in the third film, so I feel like he must have terrific fun making these Sonic movies.
Also, the words of those producers are pretty touching. That kind of respect is probably what attracted him to Sonic in the first place.
I haven’t seen the movies, but I’m sure he set the bar high for Robotnik actors
So they’re gonna replace Robotnik with that other famous Sonic villain the mainstream audience knows about who is uhhhhh uhhhhhh I’ll be be right back.
Hopefully this mean they won’t replace him, he is just too perfect.
Kind of sucks since he is a huge reason why Sonic 1/2 was popular as it was
Dirty Harry 5 were probably first movie with Jim Carrey i ever watched.
He were in a lot of movies in 1980's before he became famous.
He were acting for around 40 years.
If a Sonic 3 movie is coming, i guess he will be in that one.
@Nincholate
The issue is that Jim Carrey has given a unique comedic personality to Robitnik (which I'm not really a fan of). Something that would be hard for another actor to recreate if he doesn't return for the third movie.
Jim is in his early 60s, so it's not surprising he is considering the possibility of retiring. Still, I will be surprised if he doesn't come back in Sonic 3.
@RadioShadow Robotnik sort of had to be a comic character though? There's no way he could have just been a straight-up 'bad guy'.
And nobody does 'unhinged' better than Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey is one of my favorite actor, it would be very sad if he retire.
I think is safe to say that if Jim Carrey does decide to retire and not return as Dr.Robotnik (a.k.a. Dr.Eggman) it will most likely be the end of this movie series. I highly doubt they'd want to continue this without him.
For reasons that are insanely important to disclaim but I will get in trouble for bringing up anyway, I am insanely glad he is gone from the sonic movie
