Revealed during today's Nintendo Direct, the long-awaited sequel to Detective Pikachu has been brewing for a while, but it's finally coming out on 6th October 2023
Detective Pikachu Returns (quite literally) with Will Arnett voicing the iconic yellow mouse who has a bit of a love for caffeine. It's been five years since this iteration of the Pokémon first graced our screens on 3DS, and now Pikachu and Tim Goodman are returning.
We'll be seeing lots of new Pokémon from more recent generations, alongside many returners such as Ludicolo and many, many more.

Back on the Case
Detective Pikachu Returns is coming soon, exclusively to Nintendo Switch!
Welcome to Ryme City
A place where humans and Pokémon live side-by-side. In this bustling burg lives a gruff, tough-talking (but surprisingly lovable) Pikachu who loves coffee and calls himself a great detective.
Two Heads Are Better than One
This Pikachu works together with his partner, a young man named Tim Goodman, to solve a series of mysterious incidents that are occurring within the city.
Start the Investigation
We hope you look forward to the mystery-filled adventures of Tim and his chatty Pikachu pal – a sleuthing team that only the world of Pokémon can deliver!
Detective Pikachu Returns... returns on Switch on 6th October. Will you be getting your brew on with the yellow mouse? Let us know.

Looking forward to Detective Pikachu: Tropical Freeze
It’s about time!
Very happy to see Detective Pikachu finally come to Switch. We've been waiting for several years, so I was getting worried that it was cancelled. Detective Pikachu 2 coming as a movie tie-in in the next year or two maybe?
I never played the first one, but always meant to. And the movie was great! I'll be checking this out for sure. Looked a lot of fun, I like the sense of humour and world building.
oh you mean the lame one, not the Ryan Reynolds one
Honestly I didn't enjoy the first one, so I won't be getting this.
I hope the amiibo is re-released....
Looks a little rough at the moment in the voice department, and they didn't show any puzzles. But I'm glad it's finally showed off
I hadn't recognised Will Arnett's voice from the trailer alone (funny as his distinctive voice was something of a running gag in 30 Rock). Hell, I didn't even think they would bother to get a famous voice for the games. He's done a better job than Reynolds in the film, who sounded like he was merely phoning in his lines (man, how I hate stunt-casting in animated films).
Shows a lot of promise though. I'm half-disappointed that they didn't announce an early (shadowdrop-ish) port of the first game to tide us over in the meantime (which I have yet to play, but it's sitting on my shelf... along with the giant amiibo).
So is this the sequel or the original 3DS one?
I won't buy another pokemon game until they shape up.
What's with the graphics?
@Pink_Floyd It's a sequel according to most articles about it including this one.
@Pink_Floyd I need to know this as well. It depends on what I spend money on in the near future.
They use the anime cries in this? I know I shouldn't have expected the static sounds but it still threw me lol
Haven't played the original yet but still, finally this is coming and I'm getting it for sure (will try to get the first one as well later down the line)!
Detective Pikachu? PSHAW; I only answer to Detective Slowpoke.
It kinda just looks like an uprezzed 3DS game to me at the moment but I've heard the original was actually pretty good so I'll probably be giving this a glance once I eventually getting around to playing the first one.
Yay! I've been waiting for this one.
The original game's story plays out VERY differently than in the movie and it ends on a cliffhanger. I want to know what happens next!
I swear I heard news of this game being in the works a long time ago. It's just now that we finally see something of it.
I enjoyed the first game, nothing award winning but it certainly felt fresh at the time. I sold it since there wasn't really any replay value though.
I'll likely pick this up, though not day one. I was expecting them to announce a port of the first game to bring folks up to speed.
that awkward moment when a pokemon spinoff is better looking than the main games on the same console
@Bret @ElRoberico @Pink_Floyd it was revealed at 2019-05-28/29 (depending on time zone) in Pokémon Conference that it is sequel!
@SViper time to buy the 3DS game then.
The first game got me through a terrible flight from Europe to Australia, so I'll always have fond memories of it. Looking forward to the sequel.
Graphics are baaaad!
@ElRoberico you know that 3DS eShop closed on 2023-03-27, so your only option is now Physical copy of game as same for me. xD
PS: Fixed date on my previous post to 2019-05-28/29, 2018-05-28/29 was accidental mistake on year.
@Henmii it's Switch release not PS4 or PS5 or such a release. xD
Looks like this was made for the 3DS and just got a quick upscale for the Switch. Trailer did not convince me at all.
@SViper I only buy physical, so time to start hunting.
I REALLY hope those graphics are just preliminary. I know Creatures so well, they represent the graphical workforce of the franchise, and have been working on this game for more than 4 years, I refuse to believe those 3DS leftovers will be the final graphics.
The models look great and full-rigged, but the lighting and texture work is no different from the previous game.
@ElRoberico good luck!
I am so HYPED for this game, I been waiting for this sequel since FOREVER!! I really do hope they will do an HD port of the first game to Switch also.
I liked the first Detective Pikachu, I am a big fan of point and click adventure games and it was very much in that vibe, definitely scratched the itch. However, Detective Pikachu was one of the best looking 3DS games and this sequel looks like a 3DS game on a higher resolution, makes me think it was a 3DS game that was cancelled and revived on Switch. Still glad we are getting it, I'm interested.
Where's it confirmed that Will Arnett is voicing Pikachu? Sounds just like Kaiji Tang from the first game.
@Shift It's clearly Will Arnett voicing both Pikachu (and possibly the mayor)
It's all over the web that it's confirmed to be him
@xDeckardx Confirmed by who? Because being clearly him and all over the internet aren't confirmation of anything. Remember the Super Mario Movie commercial, where everyone was saying the actress was played by Princess Toadstool's first Super Show actress Jeannie Elias? Turned out it was really Jessica DiCicco, who played lots of incidental roles in the movie like Mario's mom and the yellow council Toad. That was confirmed because she went over her roles herself in an interview.
Meanwhile, no mention of any actors in the Direct itself or on Nintendo's website or the game's website or on Will Arnett's Twitter, where he does publicize his roles like Sweet Tooth on the upcoming Twisted Metal show. So again, who confirmed it, precisely?
Well, it's happened. Took a little longer than I thought, but it's happened.
