@FishyS I'd say it's like neither, it's a 'collection' game, main objective is to explore maps during day/night cycles, complete quests, find activities to do and get completion for things like codex, equipment, etc.

It's also got a big focus on cinematics to show marine life during the cooler phases as well as some 'spooky' abyss exploration.

Overall, this is a game people play to relax and wind down, don't expect a challenge or too much 'crazy', but go in with an open mind (and love for the ocean) and you'll love it.

@Varkster i would say it is more discovery thann collection for the story part... afterwards it is a bit more collection... but it stands way above abzu @fishyS in that it really is like a celbration of the sea, with the cinematics, the great music.. it's like starring in a jacques cousteau movie i guess... am playing the second game now, never saw that in the day but now hacked my wiiu and it is glorious

do wonder how they are going to do the controls though.. really liked the wii ones, felt like swimming at times.. (and meant i had to stop after a few hours since my arm hurted)

When this game was announced during the Nintendo Direct, it made me really happy. I have not played the Wii game, but I saw a video and liked it. Since I love the ocean and peaceful and relaxing games, I am very interested in Endless Ocean Luminous.

"This unexplored region changes with each dive", could this mean the environments are procedurally generated?

Edit: Okay, I just read up on the topic and it seems to be procedurally generated. Hopefully the next weeks, will show a little bit more of the game.

I am doing my first solo dive now. Around 50% discovered. It is really satisfying and relaxing, more than I thought it would be. The music is beautiful and I love the atmosphere. Collecting is alot of fun.

Nice, my first dive is completed. 100% discovery and 100% of animals scanned and reached rank 23. It was even more fun and relaxing, than I thought it would be. I already scanned 3319 animals.

Found Amamotsumi today, a fantasy animal, which looks like it came from the Pikmin series. Very cute.

Time to continue the story.

@Jhena Is there a way to save mid-dive, or did you just leave the game on while turning the Switch off? I did a dive and realized just how long it was going to take to do everything so I just quit after only getting like 3% because I was busy with other things.

The game saves automatically. If you choose to surface ( I do not know how it is called in your version), basically to quit the dive, you can come back later to continue the dive. The dive will start from the starting point again, so you will have to swim back to the location, where you quit the dive, but everything else will be how you left it.

So if you quit the dive you can continue or start a new one. You can also use the number of the map, to do the dive later or to share the map with someone else. I do not know whether your progress gets saved, if you just use the number or code of the map. I guess not.

@Jhena Cool, thanks. I just assumed with the randomly generated ocean that they kept advertising that it would be different every time. I didn't realize it would save to be able to re-dive in the same place. When I went back today, there it was to continue. Pretty cool. And I like how it's not just a free dive (although it can be if you want to do that), but you still get objectives and mysterious creatures like in story mode. Or at least I assume like in story mode, I have gotten very far in that yet, just finished chapter 1. So far it might not be quite up to snuff of the first two, but it's still a fun time, and maybe I will feel different after playing through the story more.

I have not played the second Endless Ocean yet, but I read many positive opinions on this site. I would really like to give it a try someday.

Luminous makes me appreciate the ocean and gives me a feeling of wanting to protect the earth.

Third dive is done and I already scanned 11 000 animals. Found 426 animals. The 99 riddles will be the real challenge. But I have fun and feel motivated to do it.

If you are trying to 100% discover a dive location but realise, that you can not reach every place, do not get discouraged. You only need to discover 80% of the map, to get the 100% achievement. If you still want to thouroughly discover the whole map, try this dive location ID: 0046 1348 3799 8194.

Daniel is a funny diver with a good heart.

Edit: I wish it would be possible to see, which animals I have befriended already. The Dumbo Octopuss looks so cute, when he is accompanying me.

@Jhena - 11 THOUSAND ANIMAL SCANS!? How many hours of gameplay do you have right now? The dang game only came out like 3 days ago!

It must have been around 20 hours, when I finished the third dive. But you have to consider, that I am a player, who likes to enjoy it slowly. I was listening to every new animal info, while scanning and I took a photo of every new animal. I was also swimming slowly most of the time and needlesly filling out the map, even though completing the map is just needed once for an achievement.

I feel like most players do not even need 15 hours to scan 11 000 animals.

I don't think I've ever done 11,000... anythings. Is scanning 500-600 animals every hour (based on those numbers) actually normal for this game, even at a slow pace...?

Unlocked 68 of 99 mystery board tiles. 527 of 578 animals found. 201 of 340 treasures found. There is so much to find.

Edit: By the way I found the animal from the upcoming event. Thankfully it seems those are not missable, for those who can not participate.

If you are only scanning, without taking pictures or reading the info, 500-600 animals per hour should be doable. You might be surprised how many fish there are. After reading the review here, I thought scanning 6000 or 8000 animals would take much longer.

@Jhena How can you have done 20 hours after the 3rd dive when the game forces you to quit each dive after 1 hour?

This is not true. I can take as much time solo diving as I want.

Found aome references to eo2 today, the omeanos guardians. Good step up to the singing dragons tomorrow in the event

@jhena. Since some of the mystery board challenges refer to treasures you find do you think they serve as a condition to find those treasures?
